The Beach Boys - Sydney Concert Review

February 4th 2010 23:31
The Beach Boys
They say you can buy a watch - but you can't buy time - but would someone tell that to Mike Love and Bruce Johnson of The Beach Boys - who surfed into Sydney last night for the first of their Opera House concerts with the Sydney Symphony

Featuring all their hits - the vocal harmonies are still there - albeit without the legendary Brian Wilson, his brother Carl or original BB - Al Jardine, the boys performed all their greatest hits including “Good Vibrations”, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Kokomo” with the full rich sound of the Symphony.

With a smattering of Hawaiian shirts and Seniors Discount cards infiltrating the iconic concert venue - it would be a harsh critic that would choose to have anything other than admiration for the two front men - who played a key role in helping earn the group the title "America's Band".

With thirty-six U.S. Top 40 hits (the most of any U.S. rock band) and fifty-six Hot 100 hits, including four number one singles - the The Beach Boys are still the No. 1-selling American band of all time.

And so it was.

A packed Sydney Opera House - with fans of all ages once again proving that feel good music (no matter which era) transends both social and cultural genres, dancing, singing and generally losing their inhabitions in the aisles as both Love and Johnson (along with their polished though much younger Beach Boys Band) turned back the clock for those who lived through the bands first coming and reignited the legend for those of us who feel an affinity with a simplier, harmonious time.

Bands will come and go - today's stars no doubt will be tomorrow's gossip sheet fodder - few if any will produce music and lyrics which in 40 years will still be remembered with reverance - even fewer will still pull a capacity crowd of all ages at venues around the world - and hold their own.

The Beach Boys, in Mike Love and Bruce Johnson are all that and more (in spite of their 69 years - yes that's right) and still crusin after all these years.

To get just a taste of what transpired at the Opera House last night - check out this clip from their concert last week in Melbourne.

Best Tear Jerker Songs of All Time

January 22nd 2010 05:34
Tears
Sad Songs Say So Much
When all you need is somebody that knows what you're feeling, music comes in all shapes and sizes and tear jerkers are no excpetion.

There are some songs that touch the soul in an incredible way.

Songs that get you choked up. Songs that remind you of heartbreak, how bad it was, how lonely it was and maybe even how much you benefited from it.

Music has that power.

There are oldies, there is alternative, there is country, there's R&B. They all have one thing in common - they're all tear jerkers - but which are the best?

With lyrics such as "You coming back to me, is against the odds, and that's what I've gotta face." - Against All Odds - by Phil Collins has gotta be up there.

Perhaps even an MJ classic such as She's Out of My Life where The King of Pop's versatility reached it's sensitive, soft peak in this ballad from 1979's "Off the Wall" album.

So many songs from Titanic " My Heart will go on" through to Honey by Bobby Goldsborough
to How Do I Live - Leann Rimes and Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers - but what are your classic tear jerk songs and is there a story behind you choice?

Spandau Ballet - Touring Downunder

January 20th 2010 06:09
Spandau Ballet
The first time that most Londoners heard the words Spandau Ballet was on the London Weekend Television arts programme Twentieth Century Box, in May 1980.

Presented by Danny Baker, Twentieth Century Box was the place you went to for your youth culture fix.

Initially inspired by the New Romantic fashion, their music has featured a mixture of funk, jazz, soul and synthpop.

While never a fan, even I have to admit they were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, achieving 10 Top Ten singles and four Top Ten albums in the UK between 1980 and 1990.

The band split acrimoniously in 1990 but announced their reunion in March 2009, complete with a tour that began in October 2009 and now comes to Sydney in April as part of their first Australian tour in 25 years.

Folks, all we need now is for the reformation of a Flock of Seagulls, Bucks Fizz and Haysi Fantayzee and we have the set . . .

The Best Rock Rumours of All Time

December 23rd 2009 01:45
The 'Rock Rumour Mill' (as we all know) is on constant high rotation 24/7 - so it was with a degree of mirth and a little curiousity that I stumbled on a list put out by Rolling Stone Magazine of the top 10 rock rumours of all time.

If the list below isn't enough to go on with - I would encourage you all to add your own - who knows - we could get one up for 2010
