The New Fab Four?

April 4th 2012 22:59
The Beatles, Fab Four, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, John Lennon
Fresh from AFP comes news that a fresh wave of Beatlemania could sweep the world after Paul McCartney's son said four of the legendary British rock group's children were considering setting up a band together.

The news source quotes James McCartney as telling the BBC that he and John Lennon's son Sean, George Harrison's son Dhani, and Ringo Starr's son Zak Starkey had mooted the idea of forming The Beatles - The Next Generation.

"I'd be up for it," said the 34-year-old, who is launching a solo career as a singer and guitarist. "Sean seemed to be into it, Dhani seemed to be into it."

He added that Starkey was less keen, but that the band could "hopefully" form with "nature's support".

All four have followed in their fathers' footsteps and pursued musical careers. Sean Lennon is a New York-based singer-songwriter, while Dhani Harrison fronts London rock band thenewno2.

Zak Starkey became a drummer like his father Ringo Starr and has played with bands including The Who and Oasis.

James McCartney, who strongly resembles his father, said he had "dreamt of being better than The Beatles".

"I'm not sure if I can do that," he told the BBC. "If anything, I would love to be equal to The Beatles - but even that's quite tough."

The Best of the Worst - Love Songs

April 3rd 2012 06:19
Love. Love Songs, Vinyl, Records, 70s, 80s, Best Of
As most of you will attest - I have a penchant for 70s music - but when it comes to love songs, even I have to admit the 70s had its fair share of absolute 'clangers'.

For those of us old enough to recoil in shock - who could forget The Floaters 12 minute extravaganza - Float On or Maureen McGovern's - There's Got to be a Morning After?

David Soul went from being a semi cool cop on Starsky and Hutch to being lambasted overnight for his little ditty Don't Give Up on Us Baby while Donny Osmond surely will never live down Puppy Love.

Elvin Bishop and Fooled Around and Fell in Love rates right up there with Barry Manilow and (well insert just about any tune here from Mandy to I Write the Songs).

Toss in Mary McGregor's Torn Between to Two Lovers and Bread's 'Diary' and you have some pretty heavy hitters in the worst love song ever category.

But my personal favourite?

Enjoy

Where Has Musical Longevity Gone?

March 16th 2012 06:08
Rolling Stones, ELO, Black Sabbath, Supergroups, Music, Bands, Pop Music
Remember that moderately successful band The Beatles?

How about The Rolling Stones? The Eagles? Maybe even The Temptations or perhaps even The Electric Light Orchestra or KISS.

All have stood the test of time and all have at least one thing in common - that being musical longevity.

Sure, theres a place for the one hit wonder, but it seems if you're in the music industry these days for more than 12 months then you've made it BIG TIME!

Perhaps its the disposable society we now inhabit. Perhaps the greed of managers and the music industry to chew and spit. Or perhaps there's another reason?

But wouldn't it be nice that straight off the top of my head I don't have to live with the notion that the only band of the pop music genre to have cracked 10 years and still able to pull some degree of 'cred' is U2.

Hmmm . . . .

The Vinyl Revival

Vinyl, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Collections, Prices, Compare, Save, Money
If you are to believe the figures, vinyl records are being sold in greater numbers than CDs at the present time - putting the so-called defunct technology at the cutting edge of cool.

Of course the reasons for its re-emergency has more than just nostalgia to thank for the rebirth

The Color of Rock!

Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Pink, Moody Blues, Bands, Rock Music, The Beatles, Eagles, Monkees, Deep Purple, Simply Red, Green Day, White Snake
Ever thought about the number of bands who for one reason or another journeyed down a particular naming genre.

Some took a walk on the 'wild side' such as The Beatles, The Eagles, The Monkees or even The Animals

Thought you knew a bit about music trivia - well so did I.

It's not until you stumble across another book, movie or interview usually involving either a disgruntled manager, burnt out rocker or biographer that you get the chance to top up your stockpile of useless information

80s Girl Bands - The Go Go's

July 21st 2011 02:25
Girl Bands, Sexy, Girls, Bands, Women, Free, 80s music, 80s trivia, fun, music
Mention girl bands and the traditionalists will immediately point to the Shirelles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, even The Andrews Sisters - but the 80s inspired a new breed of glam rock 'Girl a Go Go'.

The Go-Go's were an all girl American rock and roll band which was formed in 1978. They were the first all girl band to top the Billboard Charts with a number one album, wrote all their own material and also played their own instruments

Classic 'clangers' from the 70s

May 27th 2011 00:48
70s, Worst Songs, Pop Music, Charts, Billboard, Hits, Famous, CDs
Stop - it's hurting my ears . . .!
Since starting a 'tragic tracks' segment on PopRocks (note of explanation - it's a little radio program I host each Tuesday night) - there has been an explosion of interest for the 'rebirthing' of dozens of truly sorry music.

Now given I'm not the sole arbiter when it comes to deciding what is played and what doesn't make the cut, I'm happy to list those which have so far gone to air as classic clangers - but would love a few more suggestions
