The Vinyl Revival

January 18th 2012 01:48
Vinyl, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Collections, Prices, Compare, Save, Money
If you are to believe the figures, vinyl records are being sold in greater numbers than CDs at the present time - putting the so-called defunct technology at the cutting edge of cool.

Of course the reasons for its re-emergency has more than just nostalgia to thank for the rebirth.

Fans say the the depth of sound far outweighs the CD laser technology, plus there is the appeal of the album cover.

Which is where the real story kicks in.

There are countless collectors of vinyl around the world. Reports that some have gone as far as buying a second house just to store their massive collections are not pie in the sky urban myths.

Album covers and so-called musical oddities are now collected in the same way as rare stamps or coins and some such as the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks, the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers (with the zipper on the cover) can set you back over $100 each.

Early Beatles LPs sold in the millions but are still worth picking up. Abbey Road is valued around $25, The White Album about $50 while the first Beatles album, Please Please Me, can fetch up to $100 depending on condition.

Doors LP's are always in demand, while select Led Zepplin, Dylan and Hendrix albums are also key prizes.

But the rennaisance is not restricted to just the 60s and 70s with '80s vinyl also taking off.

Got the juices flowing? Think you've got a few gold specks still lurking in a cupboard of shelf.

Then why not check out the title Goldmine American Records that lists 100,000 albums produced from 1950 to 1975.

A version containing singles between the 1950s right through to today is available.

Sometimes vinyl can be worth its weight in gold.

The Color of Rock!

December 26th 2011 11:46
Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Pink, Moody Blues, Bands, Rock Music, The Beatles, Eagles, Monkees, Deep Purple, Simply Red, Green Day, White Snake
Ever thought about the number of bands who for one reason or another journeyed down a particular naming genre.

Some took a walk on the 'wild side' such as The Beatles, The Eagles, The Monkees or even The Animals.

Then there are bands who decided to make their mark on the musical map by labelling themselves America, Boston, Europe and even Alabama.

Then there are those who decided that the best way for fans to have a ready recall was to name themselves after people such as the Dandy Warhols, Lynyrd Skynyrd or The Dead Kennedys.

But spare a thought for those bands who achieved greatness by posting their true musical colours the flagpole.

Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Simply Red, The Moody Blues or Black Sabbath.

Throw in White Snake, Indigo Girls and Green Day and you start to get a pretty reasonable colour wheel going.

So can anyone add to the colour of rock?

Rock Trivia, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Music, Elvis
Thought you knew a bit about music trivia - well so did I.

It's not until you stumble across another book, movie or interview usually involving either a disgruntled manager, burnt out rocker or biographer that you get the chance to top up your stockpile of useless information.

So enjoy!

1) David Bowie has a lizard tattooed on his ankle.

2) Johnny Cash's estate was approached by an advertising company asking for permission to use Ring Of Fire on an ad for haemorrhoid cream. The request was refused.

3) Monaco's orchestra is bigger than its army.

4) Prince played 27 different instruments on his debut album For You.

5) Bryan Adams photographed Queen Elizabeth II for a Canadian postage stamp.

6) Alice Cooper has a golf handicap of only three

7) The Pendletones only became The Beach Boys when a young production worker named Russ Regan suggested a name-change to suit the title of the record, Surfin'

8) U2 were originally known as Feedback.

9) In the Beatles song Hey Jude, you can hear John Lennon swearing in the background as he misses a chord, if you listen very carefully.

80s Girl Bands - The Go Go's

Girl Bands, Sexy, Girls, Bands, Women, Free, 80s music, 80s trivia, fun, music
Mention girl bands and the traditionalists will immediately point to the Shirelles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, even The Andrews Sisters - but the 80s inspired a new breed of glam rock 'Girl a Go Go'.

The Go-Go's were an all girl American rock and roll band which was formed in 1978. They were the first all girl band to top the Billboard Charts with a number one album, wrote all their own material and also played their own instruments

Classic 'clangers' from the 70s

Stop - it's hurting my ears . . .!
Since starting a 'tragic tracks' segment on PopRocks (note of explanation - it's a little radio program I host each Tuesday night) - there has been an explosion of interest for the 'rebirthing' of dozens of truly sorry music.

Now given I'm not the sole arbiter when it comes to deciding what is played and what doesn't make the cut, I'm happy to list those which have so far gone to air as classic clangers - but would love a few more suggestions

The 70's were a Golden Era of horrible songs . . .

Cite just about anything by Tony Orlando and/or Dawn, Cher or Donny and Marie and you can see my point

Casey Kasem & The American Top 40

"Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars." This was Casey Kasem's weekly signoff as host of American Top 40.

As a teenager growing up in Australia, I remember I would put aside Sunday nights for the sole purpose of listening to the dulcet tones of Kasem and tune in to hear what was no doubt heading to our shores in the way of the next big set of chart toppers
