Power Pop Heroes
August 3rd 2009 00:57
Power Pop - that almost indeflatable period in the early to mid 70's when flares, big hair, whaling guitars and a unmistakable rythmic pop culture beat ruled the airwaves is surely deserving of a resurection.
While having its birthrite in the late 60's - Power pop only really came into its own a decade later - and like a summer storm - swept aside the music charts and eveything in its wake before making its way out to sea - virtually never to be seen or heard of again.
With names like Badfinger, Cheap Trick, The Cars, ELO, Nick Lowe, The Knack, The Romantics, The Sweet and T-Rex to name just a few - the roll call is a who's who of the industry - with only the occassional glimpse of what was through efforts today by bands such as Fountains Of Wayne.
Even remakes from bands such as The Tourists (see below) have to be commended for trying to re-establish some form of cultural resurgence.
Flippant?
Perhaps.
Pop Trash?
I don't think so.
For it's time?
Definitely.
