Breakfast In America
July 13th 2009 03:57
OK - so this old guy who probably has never heard of Nirvana reckons that some hick 70's band called Supertramp were pretty cool - what would he know?
Probably enough to recount that despite popular misconception - that great albums did exist before the 80's - and no - not just from the Stones or the Beatles.
Breakfast in America is quite frankly for its time.
It's an album that 'made' Supertramp' and demonstrates their raw song writing talent along with their ability to not only tell a story, harmonise and break a few (until then at least) unwritten musicial rules.
From the obvious hit songs such as "The Logical Song" to the more introvert perls like "Casual Conversations" it ranks as one of the great albums of the late ´70's and still holds it own today.
With virtual Best Of track list - Breakfast in America justifyably ranks right up there in my Top 20 All time great albums
]Track Listing

The Logical Song
Goodbye Stranger
Breakfast In America
Oh Darling
Take The Long Way Home

my dad thinks no great albums have existed after the 80s . . . he is a mad keen Led Zeppelin fan, he also likes Pink Floyd and Elton John and Lynard Skynard and Creedence Clearwater Revival . . . and the list goes on
i have to agree, it was a great time in music back then

I'm buoyed by the fact you're atuned to the great bands of the past . . .
I'm dismayed that I also appear to have fallen into the dreaded "my dad" category and the "back then" category.
How the circle turns huh

Most of us actually started with our parents vinyl collections . . . the CD's probably came a little later.
Now I do feel old

BLIND MELON Galaxie (Scarce 1995 US Capitol label 4-track promotional 10" RED VINYL single, also including demo versions of St Andrew's Fall, Wilt and 2x4, picture sleeve SPRO-79640).
i presume my parents still have it mixed in with their vinyl collection
is a 10" different to a 45?

A 33 is the larger version and would today be known as an album - featuring up to 20 songs - 10 per side.
Prior to this there were 78's - which were slightly smaller than 33's and contained at first only 1 song each side then later a few more.
The 10-inch (and coloured) releases came much much later.
