The Greatest Disco Songs of All Time
February 21st 2011 03:19
The halycon days of disco were undoubtedly those years between 1976 and 1980 - when dance floors were littered with would-be Travolta's and dancing diva's.
It was when record company's chewed up artists and spat out hits - vaguely reminescent of tossing bread crumbs to pigeons - as the masses gouged on a diet of froth and bubble.
It produced more one hit wonders than any other time in recent music history and while some survived - most were left to ponder life from the back stalls.
But amidst the mayhem of coloured lights and shiny disco balls some songs lingered.
A few soldiered on as anthems, some immortalised through soundtracks and a handful or two simply because they were just plain good and a testament to the times.
A recent survey of music fans in both the US and UK listed I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor the number one disco hit of the 70s followed by Le Freak, Stayin' Alive, Funky Town and YMCA by the Village People.
I beg to differ.
Iconically I would have expected Hot Stuff by Donna Summer and Macho Man to have made an appearance much higher in the listings than they did while early significant hits such as Car Wash and Rock the Boat scarceless receive mention.
But what says you?
What were the greatest disco hits of the era which style forgot?
