ABBA: Where It All Began
May 5th 2009 03:20
It was the phenomonen that was waiting to happen - Abba and the now immortalised "Waterloo" which strangley enough (so music historicans tell us) was first called "Honey Pie".
The first single from Swedish supergroup - it was also the first single to be credited as "ABBA".
Having won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest on 6 April, the group began their path to worldwide fame.
"Waterloo" was originally written as a song for the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, after the group finished believe it or not 3rd with "Ring Ring" the previous year in the Swedish preselection contest.
The basis behind the song "Waterloo" is about a girl who is about to surrender to romance, as Napoleon had to surrender at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and was one of ABBA's few songs to be written with simultaneous rock music and jazz beats.
The "Waterloo" single introduced the world to the phenomenon that was to become ABBA.
In 1994, "Waterloo" - together with several other ABBA hits - was included in the soundtrack of the film Muriel's Wedding while in 2005, during the fiftieth celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest, "Waterloo" was chosen as the best song in the competition's history.
Contrary to what the song claims, Napoleon did not surrender at Waterloo; he surrendered at Rochefort on the French Atlantic coast four weeks later.

Nice to see you spreading yourself around. And Morgan, two is well enough for me too. Some people have lists of them.

I think the song was a watershed for the industry - it proved that complexity in musical composition could be packaged in a simple form for the masses.
In its purest form - I guess the band realised that a catchy cohesive pop tune and a little sex sells.
Thanks for your kind comments as well

Glad that you're man enough to admit you know it's called bubblegum pink - most blokes would just call it pink
Don't adjust your set . . .
Cheers champion
