80s Girl Bands - The Go Go's

July 21st 2011 02:25
Girl Bands, Sexy, Girls, Bands, Women, Free, 80s music, 80s trivia, fun, music
Mention girl bands and the traditionalists will immediately point to the Shirelles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, even The Andrews Sisters - but the 80s inspired a new breed of glam rock 'Girl a Go Go'.

The Go-Go's were an all girl American rock and roll band which was formed in 1978. They were the first all girl band to top the Billboard Charts with a number one album, wrote all their own material and also played their own instruments.

They dabbled in surf, new wave, pop punk, and rock and whose line up featured Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar player, keyboard player, and backup vocals), Belinda Carlisle (lead vocals), Gina Schock (drum and percussion player and backup vocal), Kathy Valentine (guitar player and back up vocals), and Jane Wiedlin (guitar, vocal and backup vocals).

With five US number 1's to their credit it's not suprising that success - like a summer storm came quickly for the group.

They released the single We Got the Beat, and also Our Lips Are Sealed, on the Stiff label in 1982 on the backside of album Beauty and the Beat.

Their follow up album, Vacation, was also a hit - however like most meteoric rises - the group's demise was just as dramatic.

Disputes also broke out among the members and Jane Wiedlin left the group in October, 1984 replaced with Paula Jean Brown.

The band played in the Rock In Rio festival but Carlisle and Caffey decided to break up the band in 1985 citing that their hearts were no longer in their work.

Carlile went on to pursue a solo career and released a string of singles in the 1980's while Wiedlin also released solo albums and also took on acting roles in movies.

The Go-Go’s reunited briefly in 1990 and have performed off and on since then.

Loved their first album which was actually better than their later "best of album". They were up there with Hall and Oates, the Police, Elo and Supertramp.
